Frequently Asked Questions

All cars can be picked up from 26457 Donegal Bay Road. Keys will be available after checking in to our kiosk.

We’re a quick five minute walk from the Beaver Island Boat Company Dock. Hang a left out of the boat dock, hang a right up the hill toward Daddy Franks, go through The Four Corners, and we’ll be on your right after a few hundred yards.

To have a vehicle ready for you at one of the airports or the boat dock, you must book a valet service during the booking. We can not guarantee that we will be able to personally pick you up, but we will try our best to accommodate.

Our facility is centrally located within a 5 minute walk of all downtown hotels and multi unit condos and is available 24 hours a day for charging. If hotels and campgrounds do not readily have an outlet available, the following businesses provide charging at no fee: Paradise Bay Coffee Shop, Stoney Acre Grill, McDonough’s Market, Island Airways, Inland Auto EV, Beaver Island Community Center, and Central Michigan University Biological Station.

In addition, there are emergency phones with electrical outlets being constructed at Port of St. James Campground, Bill Wagner Campground, and Iron Ore Bay beach.

We will provide you with the charging cable and an extension cord. GEM cars require a standard 120v outlet for charging, with the charging port located on the front of the vehicle.

To receive a full charge from a fully drained battery, it takes approximately 8 hours via a 120v plug. Our cars are specifically sized to allow you to traverse the island freely throughout the day and still have enough juice to enjoy the island nightlife. Just remember to plug it in before heading to bed.

Our 4 seat GEM car can approximately make a 50 mile trip on a single charge. This is equivalent to about one and a half trips around the full island circuit. These ranges will vary based on weight in the vehicle, temperature, and idle time during your trip.

With 2 people and a full cooler, we’ve seen up to 72% charge remaining at Iron Ore Bay on The South End of the island with a starting destination of downtown. We do suggest a full charge before heading out.

P.S. The correct way to go around the island is counter clockwise.

Please contact us if there are issues with the vehicle during your trip. Contact numbers are listed on the vehicle dash and in your welcome pamphlet.

GEM cars have a cruising speed of 25 MPH. This is ideal for the dirt roads that embody most of beaver island. We do suggest you try your best to avoid Kings Highway south of the gas station.

We do not provide guided tours. We do supply a map in the car for your use and will have suggested routes posted on the vehicle roof map.

For guided tours, please refer to Beaver Island Boat Company website.
